I made the decision to go to Atlanta for the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar about a month ago. I had never been, and had heard such great things about it, and since I was still waiting on my portfolio books to come in the mail, I figured, I needed to be around photojournalists and those aspiring for some early winter inspiration. I needed the community. Amazing the perceptions I encountered while attending. Amazing to see how differently so many photojournalists think and believe and act on their own paths in the photo-j world. I very much enjoyed my five minutes with Bill Eppridge, because I am in awe of his photojournalism work, and also because of his profound image of Robert Kennedy’s assassination prompted my choice to make pictures as my career. He also has a cat named Bear, as I have a cat named Bears. I found a ton of tiny similarities between Eppridge and me, and a ton in the beliefs of Robert Kennedy. He would have been an amazing president.
I found the classes on Friday extremely beneficial, as well as meeting those I admire in the photojournalism world. Saturday was a huge downer, all due to one speaker, but alas, he was telling the truth….but a reality. Scary times and huge stories and huge changes we will encounter this coming year. For all of us. I spent some time with Marc Kawanishi of the San Antonio Express News as well. His words and inspiration were completely worth me attending this year. But alas, I have some serious work ahead of me, most of which I am excited to tackle and to survive as a photographer and documentary photographer.
